The government raised the price of generic drugs began March 24, 2011. The increase made an effort to rationalize the price of drugs.
Director General of Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Ministry of Health, Sri Indrawaty, said the new policy has been signed by the Minister of Health, Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih.
"The increase ranges from Rp75 to Rp9.700 government for medicine production. As for the retail increase to Rp68 Rp16.550," he said during a visit to PT Indofarma, Cibitung, Bekasi, Thursday, March 31, 2011.
According to him, the rationalization is done as part of government efforts to ensure equitable distribution and availability of medicines for people with affordable prices. "We hope, with the rationalization, the availability of the drug could reach into all corners of the country," he said.
Based on the Decree of the Minister of Health, 2010, of which there are 453 kinds of drugs, 230 of whom did not experience price changes. A total of 24 species experienced a decline in prices. "The ride is only 176 items," he said.
The government promised to conduct an evaluation of this drug price rationalization. "If after being evaluated in the field, the price is still considered overpriced, we could send down again," he also said that the increase is fairly reasonable, because it is still in a matter of dollars.
In 2010, the use of generic drugs in hospitals has increased seven percent from 50 -57 percent. In fact, more and more doctors are starting to give patients generic prescription drugs.
The constraints, drug companies are still reluctant to produce generic drugs because the price is very cheap. This makes the availability of generic drugs in a limited field. "For that, we did rationalization to ensure availability and equitable distribution."
However, Sri confirmed, although there was an increase, the price of generic medicines is still far cheaper than other branded drugs.
